Ethylene prices gain in Asia

This week, Ethylene prices gained in Asia. The price rise was supported by higher upstream energy rates, coupled with a lift in buying inquiries in the region.

Stronger downstream PE pricing trends, further supported the price gain.

CFR South East Asia prices were at the USD 800/mt levels, a week on week gain of USD 5/mt.

CFR North East Asia ethylene prices were assessed higher at the USD 860/mt level, a rise of USD 10/mt from the previous week.

In plant news, Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC) resumed production at its No. 2 cracker, on June 4, 2020. The cracker remained shut for around 3-4 days, owing to technical issues. Located at Mailiao in Taiwan, the No. 2 cracker has an ethylene production capacity of 1.03 million mt/year, propylene production capacity of 520,000 mt/year and butadiene production capacity of 162,000 mt/year.

In other plant news, Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC), is likely to undertake a planned maintenance shutdown at its No.3 cracker, by mid-August 2020. The cracker is expected to remain off-line for about 6 weeks. Located at Mailiao in Taiwan, the No. 3 cracker has an ethylene production capacity of 1.2 million mt/year and propylene production capacity of 600,000 mt/year.
